The Man Who Looks Like Obama

Spot the difference: Barack Obama and his doppelganger

Ilham Anas, a photographer from Java, travels the world cashing in on his uncanny resemblance to the US president

What's it like to be the spitting image of the most photographed face in the world? When I catch up with Ilham Anas – AKA the president of the United States – he can't talk for long; he is on the back of a scooter in his home city of Bandung on the island of Java, racing between "jobs" as Obama.

Since Barack Obama's improbable rise to the presidency, 36-year-old Anas's life has taken a similarly unlikely turn. The prominent ears that made him self-conscious as a child, he says, have become his fortune; a photographer by trade, Anas has found a new career as the leading presidential doppelganger.

Now he travels the world, lending his likeness to various charities and causes; he recently spoke at a Greenpeace rally in Thailand urging global leaders (including his own double) to do more to address climate change. Anas has appeared in several TV ads, including a bizarre commercial for a Philippine heartburn medication, in which he is overfed by a woman impersonating the former president of the Philippines, Gloria Arroyo.

Anas says he is a huge fan of Obama, and is careful with the work he chooses, refusing jobs he feels might be controversial or reflect badly on his famous twin. So uncanny is the likeness that he regularly gets stopped in airports by Obama admirers. He has taken to wearing a hat and sunglasses on the street to avoid the inevitable questions. Obama's rise has changed Anas's life, and his view of himself, as he recounts in his autobiography, Because of Obama. "I see my resemblance to Obama as a blessing," he says. "I used to look at the mirror and I had a negative perception of myself."

He also shares the president's love of a quiet cigarette. But there are differences too. "One thing I could not mimic is his voice. Obama has a baritone voice; mine is like a child's," says Anas. He is also a devout Muslim; he can be seen praying in a video on the Time magazine website. His faith, he says, guides his family and professional life.

Indonesians delighted in Obama's election in 2008; he was seen as one of their own. Obama spent four years in Jakarta as a boy in the late 60s, and his stepfather was Javanese. But two cancelled trips last year saw the ardour cool a little. A statue of a young Obama was removed from a central Jakartan park in February after a Facebook campaign by Indonesians who argued he had not done enough to deserve the tribute. The statue now stands in the yard of his childhood school.

Anas noticed demand for his presidential services wane in his homeland, despite the continuing flood of international requests. But much was restored by the presidential visit last month, despite it being cut short because of fears that volcanic ash spewing from Mount Merapi could cause Air Force One to be grounded.

"Obama used Bahasa Indonesia [the national language] in his speech, and he got enthusiastic applause," says Anas. "He talked about his experience in his village in Jakarta as a four-year-old and his deep feelings for our country. He showed us how humble he is, that he is warm and sincere."

Anas, however, missed Obama's trip to Indonesia. He was in the US . . . playing Obama.

Governors Abusing Me Not Helping Their States: GOODLUCK JONATHAN

President Goodluck Jonathan has told state governors who cast aspersion on him and the Federal Government that such action will not help the development of their states.

He said on Tuesday that the best thing for state governors to do was to take their cue from Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State by ensuring cordial relationship with him and the Federal Government.

Jonathan gave the advice while receiving a delegation of Anambra State indigenes who were at the Presidential Villa, Abuja to thank him for the support he gave to Obi, the outgoing governor of the state.

Obi will hand over to the governor-elect, Chief Willie Obiano, on March 17.

He said unlike some unnamed politicians who preferred to fight him, the outgoing Anambra State governor cooperated with his government and played active role in the Economic Management Team.

He said, “Peter Obi worked very hard as a governor, very friendly to the government.

“He is a member of our Economic Management Team and an honorary adviser to the President on Finance and Commerce and he worked very hard, attended all the meetings and made very meaningful contributions.

“Even the day we announced that he might be leaving, the suggestion was that we should still keep him even if he is no longer the governor of Anambra State. That is the relationship we had. I have to thank Governor Peter Obi for that good relationship.

“A number of politicians feel that the best thing to do is to be abusing Mr. President, abusing the Federal Government and so on.

“You are elected to develop your state, I think the best thing is to have good relationship with the centre, whether you have a pin or you don’t have but one day it will come. Wearing boxing gloves, jumping into the boxing ring to face Mr. President does not help the development of any state.”

He promised that he would extend the same hand of friendship he had with Obi to his successor.

Jonathan announced that the ground-breaking of the second Niger Bridge would hold on March 10.

He explained that the event was delayed because of his directive that the project should not start until the finances were worked out.

He said, “On the second Niger Bridge, I remember I said we would make sure that we start that project before Peter Obi steps aside.

“The Finance Minister and the Works Minister must work out details so that if we are going for the ground-breaking ceremony, we know that the work will not stop until the project is completed and God willing that is what it is going to be.

“We have agreed to come on Monday, the 10th of this month. We will quickly do the ground-breaking, I think it is about 11 am on Monday before we rush back to Abuja to inaugurate the National Conference delegates.”

Obi, on his part, confirmed that it would be difficult for any state governor to make any meaningful impact without the support of the Federal Government.

“It will be difficult for any governor to make any meaningful impact without the support of the Federal Government. I have served under three Presidents and I can say the difference. Continue to support the governor-elect. Anambra is your home and we shall continue to stand by you,” the outgoing governor said.

WE CANNOT SUCCUMB TO TERMS OF BOKO HARAM, SAYS E.A ADEBOYE

The General Overseer of the Redeemed
Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch
Adejare Adeboye, has called on Nigerians not
to lose hope, as the country would be great
again.
The popular preacher spoke on Sunday at his
72nd birthday message at the national
headquarters of RCCG in Ebute-Meta, Lagos.
According to Adeboye, no matter what the
nation was going through, it would be great
again.
Speaking through his Special Assistant on
Administration and Personnel, Pastor Johnson
Odesola, Adeboye noted: This year,“2014, is a
glorious one and a new beginning for as many
that will put their trust in God and not in man
in the face of the challenges facing the
country”.
He decried the insurgency in some parts of the
North, which has led to the killing of innocent
people, saying: “We cannot agree to the terms
of Boko Haram, as the condition that Western
education is a sin is terrible. But let us hear
them out while we also apply the use of force
to curb attacks on innocent people”.
Adeboye predicted an end to the Boko Haram
insurgency, noting that Nigerians in the past
experienced religious crises and God
intervened.

ASUU TO CLASH WITH FASHOLA OVER RISE IN LASU'S TUITION FEE

President of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, Dr. Nasir Fagge, has said that the
union will resist the rise in tuition fee at the
Lagos State University.
He added that the establishment of
universities by the government should be for
knowledge acquisition rather than for profit
making.
While speaking at a symposium organised by
the Education Rights Campaign group held at
the University of Ibadan, Fagge said the hike
in tuition fee would not take care of
infrastructural demands in LASU but would
deny children of the poor masses access to
public education.
He said, “Universities are not commercial
centres for internally generated revenues but
knowledge production centres.
The new fee introduced by the school would
have come earlier than now but it was halted
by the intervention of ASUU through a
delegation led by Dr. Dipo Fashina.
ASUU will not support hike in fees in any
public university in Nigeria.”
The union’s final response will be determined
by the outcome of the meeting of delegates
sent to meet the visitor Governor Babatunde
Fashola and the Vice-Chancellor of LASU,
Prof. John Obafunwa.
The ASUU boss also called for a review of
immunity clause in the Nigerian Constitution
and exposure of corrupt public officers in order
to reduce the cost of governance in the
country.
He said, “The law which protects leaders from
being prosecuted for stealing public money
during their reign is against the masses.
The law is against those who are daily
suffering from the consequences of unchecked
stealing and pilfering of the collective wealth
of the nation.”

MICHAEL JORDAN EARNED $90 MILLION IN 2013 ..

According to Forbes magazine, retired
basketball legend Michael Jordan made more
money in 2013 than any other retired athlete
in the world, earning an estimated $90million,
more than any active playing athlete aside
from boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. who made
over $100m. And where did all the money
come for someone who hasn't played
basketball in almost 10 years? Air Jordan of
course!
Nike released the Air Jordan 10 "Powder
Blue" retro sneaker on Saturday, 20 years
after the first Jordan 10s hit shelves. Like
all the Jordan retro releases, this one
was highly anticipated and first-day sales
hit $35 million.
Retail shoe sales for the Jordan Brand in
the U.S. grew 11% last year to $2.7
billion, with basketball making up 84% of
that, according to Powell. Roughly 50%
to 55% of that goes to Nike. If you factor
in sales of Jordan apparel, the
international Jordan business and sales
at Nike stores, the Jordan brand is
contributing roughly $2 billion of revenue
to Nike, which posted sales of $26 billion
over the last 12 months. Jordan, the
man, gets a cut of every shoe, hoodie or
pair of shorts sold by Nike under the
Jordan Brand.
We estimate MJ's take from Nike was at
least $75 million last year. "Given that he
is the name that launched the brand, you
could argue that he deserves more," says
Phil de Picciotto, founder and president of
Octagon. "Jordan is the perfect athlete."
For perspective, in all of 2013, Adidas
sold $40 million in the U.S. of the
signature shoes of its top star, Derrick
Rose. The Bulls' current star guard isn't
the only one operating in the shadow of
Jordan. Reigning MVP LeBron James is
the top seller among current NBA players
with $300 million at retail last year for
his Nike shoes, according to data tracker
SportsOneSource. Jordan crushed those
numbers with $2.25 billion in U.S. retail
basketball sales in 2013. It has been
more than a decade since Michael Jordan
last appeared in an NBA uniform, but MJ
most certainly has still got it.

9-YEAR OLD BOY INSERTS 4 SEWING NEEDLES INTO HIS STOMACH FOR FAILING..

A 9-year-old boy in China inserted four sewing
needles into his stomach after he scored 99%
in his examination.
According to the father of the boy, he had first
noticed lumps on his stomach as he was
bathing but the child did not let him get a
closer look. Some days later the boy had
terrible stomach pains and was rushed to the
2nd Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical
University.
At the hospital, the doctors discovered he had
needles in stomach and it took them 2 hours
to remove the needles which were burrowed
deep into his stomach.
According to the boy from Harbin in
Heilongjiang Province, it was a form of
punishment to atone his 1% failure....

"BIBLE NEVER SAID 'DO NOT ABORT A BABY CONCIEVED VIA RAPE'--PASTOR CHRIS OYAKHILOME

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, yesterday, during
Christ embassy's Communion Service
answered the question: 'Can a baby that is a
product of rape be aborted?'
Using David and Bethsheba's case to answer
the question, Pastor Chris said despite David's
prayer and fasting, the child who was a result
of David's sin still died.
His words:
No child should be brought into this world by
force, if a lady has been raped, it is left for her
to make a decision of whether to keep the
baby or not. If you have never been raped or
someone
close to you haven't, you may not agree with
this statement.
It is never mentioned anywhere in the bible, to
keep a child from a woman who was raped!
Do you agree?

FEDERAL COURT FIX DATE FOR "CBN GOVERNOR'S SUIT"

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday fixed
March 21 to hear a motion filed by the
suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN), Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, seeking
enforcement of his fundamental right.
Lamido had filed the suit through his counsel,
Prof. Yemi Osibanjo (SAN), seeking an order
restraining the police and officers of the State
Security Service (SSS) from arresting,
detaining or otherwise harassing him.
Joined as first to third respondents in the suit
are: The Attorney General of the Federation
(AGF), Inspector General of Police (I-G) and
the SSS.
When the case was mentioned on Friday,
Justice Ibrahim Buba adjourned it to March
21 for hearing, following an application for
adjournment moved by counsel to all the
respondents.
Counsel to the AGF, Dr Oscar Nliam, holding
the brief of Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN),
informed the court that his office had just
been briefed on the matter.
He told the court that they were yet to receive
all the processes filed by the applicant, and
therefore prayed the court for a short
adjournment to enable him collate all
processes.
Counsel representing the I-G, Mr Chukwu
Agwu, on his part, informed the court that he
was only notified last night by his boss from
the Force Headquarters that the suit will be
coming up in court.
He said that the second respondent was yet to
receive the processes and also prayed the
court for an adjournment to enable him look
at the processes when they arrive.
In the same vein, counsel representing the
SSS, Mr Ahmed Musa, also aligned himself
with the submissions of his colleagues, adding
that an adjournment will be to their favour
especially as parties were still within time of
filing.
Counsel representing the applicant, Mr Kola
Awodehin (SAN),, did not object to the prayers
for adjournment, but noted that the suit
bordered on fundamental rights enforcement
and ought to be dealt with expeditiously.
Justice Buba, however, in a short ruling,
adjourned the case to March 21 for hearing....
