How do analgesics work on pain? Answered by Craig C. Freudenrich and Discovery Fit & Health Contributor Craig C. Freudenrich When you're injured or have a headache, you reach for the bottle of pain relievers. All that matters at that point is that the pills or capsules work -- and quickly. To understand how analgesics relieve pain, it helps to first understand how your brain perceives pain. Pain perception, or nociception, is the process by which a painful stimulus is relayedfrom the site where you're injured to the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord). There are several steps in this process: 1.Injury-- Mechanical injuries, such as pressure, punctures and cuts or chemical (burn) stimuli injure tissues. The injured tissues release chemicals (potassium, prostaglandins, histamines, bradykinin and substance P). 2.Reception-- A specialized nerve cell called anociceptor senses the stimulus and the chemicals released from injured tissues.

  • Most Basic Ingredient for Academic Success If we were to ask a typical student, “What would you do differently in order to perform better than before?” the most probable response will be, “I will try to work harder and put in more effort than I did before.” I know this because that’s often the response Iget; but when I further ask whether they didn’t work hard or put in a lot of effort previously, the frequent response is: “I actually did! I put in my best effort, but I don’tunderstand why I didn’t get the results I expected.” Think about that. Is it a familiar experience with you? I’ve found that almost any student can relate well with this scenario which is one of the root causes of a lack of motivation and of feelings of despondency among many students; or in the worst case, of an outright dismissal of the need to strive for better academic performance. How else would they have felt? No one actually enjoys going through such experiences. However, this seems to suggest that academic success is not solely based on working hard and putting in more and more effort. Of course that will come in handy, butthere’re many other factors! It’s a whole system which comprises of several units; some tangible andsome intangible, some internal and some external, some are clearly written and some are at best implied, some can be controlled while some just have to be complied with. To get the best from the whole academic systemtherefore, each student will have to master all the units; and today, we’ll start by examining the most basic of them all. It is intangible, but controls the tangible; it is internal yet will produce the external. It will be utterly futile to attempt to get the external results withoutfirsthaving this internal quality. School will be terribly boring without it; even going to class will be like walking from one state to another. This blog will be meaningless to anyone who doesn’t have it. Itis that one quality without which no one can ever achieve any success. It is the most fundamental factor of them all:a strong and persistent desire to succeed academically. Being a student is tough. Daring to be an outstanding one is even tougher. It requires some sacrifices, higher levels of concentration, better thinking, studying and personal habits, and commitment to put the great principles we’d be learning here to practice. A keen desire to succeed is therefore a necessity; it will help you make the right choices for your own education. A few years ago, some psychologists carried out an experiment to find out what were people’s biggest regrets in life; the results clearly showed that it was their education. Some said, “I wish I’d gotten more education”, while others said, “I regret not having applied myself more in school. I didn’t take school seriously enough, spending my time with friends who also didn’t study much” You can tell if you really have a strong desire to succeed academically by examining how much of your free time you spend learning, and how much of your financial resources you invest in your education through relevantmaterials. Desire flows from interest; and interest comes when you pay attention to a thing for some time. Once you have a strong desire to succeed academically, you will have to sustain that drive and keep it alive. Poor results, failures and disappointments are some of the strongest quenchers of desire; but they should never be seen or taken as the end of everything.Failure is only an opportunity to begin again more intelligently; and therefore always brings with it the seed foran equivalent success. What matters is what you make of it. Jessie Belle Rittenhouse, an American poet who lived in the early 20thcentury captured this principle so well that I would have the pleasure of quoting her here: “I bargained with Life for a penny, and Life will pay no more, “However I begged at evening when I counted my scanty store. “For Life is a just employer, He gives you whatyou ask, “But once you have set the wages, why, you must bear the task. “I worked for a menial’s hire, only to learn, dismayed, “That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid” Life – or school – would have willingly paid; but do you have the desire to demand academic excellence? How strong is that desire?

  • For Women: Dangers of Lesbianism Posted by: Toluon January 8, 2013 Numerous factors have been shown to be associated with increased risk of various health problems. Today we present general information about some of the factors that put women at higher risk of cancer. As for lesbian health research in general, information is limited on the prevalence of particular health risk factors among lesbians. The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) provides one useful source of data for looking at differences between lesbian and heterosexual women in the study in terms of certain health-related risk variables. 1. Religious Implication or Wrath of God Lev. 18:22, “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”1 Lev. 20:13, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them” Unlike other sins, homosexuality has a heavy judgment administered by God Himself upon those who commit it – and support it. This judgment is simple in that those who practice it are given over to their passions – which means that their hearts are allowed to be hardened by their sins. “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error,” (Rom. 1:26-27). As a result, they can no longer see the error of what they are doing. They will not seek forgiveness. They will die in their sins. They will face God’s holy condemnation. But, that isn’t all. In addition to the judgment of being given over to their sin, those involved in it also promote it and condemn others who don’t approve of their behavior. “…and, although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them,” (Rom. 1:32). So, in their hearty approval of homosexuality they encourage others to be trapped in their sinfulness. They will not trust in Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. Without Jesus, they will have no forgiveness. Without forgiveness, they will have no salvation. Without salvation, there is only damnation in eternal hell. But, we don’t want this for anyone. 2. High Rate of STDs and HIV They suffer a high rate of STDs due to the unprotected s*x that always occur in a girl to girl sexaul intercourse…they engage in a lot of fondling, intense fingering, mouth-to-v**ina s*x intercourse and mouth-to-anus s*xual intercourse [in which they suck up vaginal and an*l fluids of their partner whom they are not even sure of their s*x life…because the partner might as well be bisuexual meaning…she sleeps with both men and women…and will definitely have unprotected s*x with 4 out of 12 men because of the reluctancy in protected s*x awareness that has gone numb from the already existing unprotected s*x with her female counterparts. and lesbians never keep one partner…they get down one sensing that you are one of them and will suck up all their vaginal and an*l fluids asap…while fingering with either dirty hands or unsterilized s*x toys that must have been used by or one their numerous partners or encounters. thereby making the circulation of STDs and HIV amongst them to be on the high side 3. Overweight. Body mass index (BMI), an indication of overweight, differed significantly between lifetime lesbians and heterosexual women in the WHI, with a greater proportion of lifetime lesbians having a BMI of more than 27 (52.3% of lifetime lesbians compared to 45.8% of heterosexual women). 4. History of Pregnancy. Women who reported having a lesbian s*xual identity were least likely to have children (30%), and those reporting a heterosexual identity were most likely to have children (73%). Slightly more than half (58%) of those reporting any lesbian same-s*x orientation (identity, behavior, or desire) indicated that they had biological children. Thus, although lesbians are less likely to report having biological children than are heterosexual women, there are still substantial numbers of lesbians who are parents, particularly if these figures include adoptive or other nonbiological parents. In the WHI sample, lesbians were much less likely to have ever been pregnant than were heterosexual women. These differences were particularly pronounced for lifetime lesbians of whom 34.1% had previously been pregnant, compared to 61.2% of the mature lesbians and 89.9% of the heterosexual women.
  • What a contrast! On the throne sat Felix; the faded and withered pagan, a former slave. He became a favorite of Claudius, and by that emperor was exalted to high rank. Greed, cruelty and lust were stamped upon his countenance. His administration as procurator of Judea had been marked by injustice, extortion and violence. By his side sat the lovely Jewess, Drusilla, a daughter of Herod Agrippa (she was not more than 18 or 19), sitting next to Felix, about to listen to Paul. She had first married a gentile, who to please her had become a Jew. Then Felix with the aid of a sorcerer’s incantations had won her from her husband and was living with her in sin and shame. All that was dishonorable in mankind was represented by that combination of Felix and Drusilla as they sat on the throne awaiting the address by St. Paul. Before them, with chains on his arms and his body scarred with the marks of his suffering for Christ sake, and his coarse garment which by his own hands was self-woven, contrasting the fine velvet and purple of Felix and his paramour, stood the lonely ambassador for Christ. The moment of truth has arrived; for herein are converging at least four world views. Paul was raised a Jew, a Hebrew, in a Greek city, a Roman citizen, now bringing the message of Christ. Four world views are colliding here – the Roman world which gave to us the legal categories; the Hebrew world which gave to us our moral categories; the Greek world which gave to us our philosophical categories; and the Christian world which gave to us our salvivic categories. How is this man with these four world views colliding going to bring a clear message so that Felix understands it, both with gentleness and verve? How does he begin? He begins with the point of reference. Here, the irresistible force is meeting up with the immovable object. This is not promiscuous evangelism which can easily take place in our time. Paul wasn’t going to be sucked into the Roman system that told people ‘your religion is private; what you do in public is a different matter’- the same line some politicians and artists use today. Where is the point of reference? Here it is; righteousness is not a dogma, morality is not a grocery list, Jesus Christ is the point of reference - righteousness by faith in the person of Jesus. He is the point of reference for all history. This apostle knew with Felix, he had to get to that point of reference, and he got there. Dear friend, the finger of God is in all of history, and Jesus Christ Himself is the point of collision; what are you going to do with Him? WRITTEN BY CALEB AKUSU...
  • 12 Most Embarrassing Questions Women Ask.... Can I catch something nasty from sitting on a public toilet seat? Not likely??. There are actually more germs on the floor in a public bathroom (hang up your purse!) than on the toilet seat. If the bathroom seems especially gross, cover the seat with toilet paper. But don’t worry too much about contracting a séxually transmitted disease from your pit stops. If you have a healthy immune system, you’ll be able to resist whatever germs you’re exposed to while on the john. If you’re really worried, look for stalls that have toilet paper covers. When a toilet is flushed, it can spray germs into the air. If the toilet paper is protected by a cover, you’re less likely to get germs when you wipe. Sometimes I wear my jeans several times before washing them. Is that sanitary? Have a pair of jeans you love above all others? No worries, as long as you’re wearing underwéar. Going commando? Wash your jeans after each wéaring. Otherwise bacteria growing on your denim could cause an infection. Are big-bréasted women more likely to get bréast cancer? Being well-endowed doesn’t increase your cancer risk. That said, being overweight does. So if your curves are from added weight, you’re at a higher risk than a woman who is slim. Big bréasts can make feeling lumps or detecting tumors more difficult. The more tissue there is, the more you have to feel and inspect. That’s why women with larger bréasts should visit their doctor annually. How much bréast sagging is normal? As women get older, the ligaments that hold up the bréasts lose their elasticity. Plus, bréast tissue becomes more fatty, which leads to more sag. Weight gain or loss, pregnancy, and bréastfeeding all contribute to sagging, because when the bréasts grow and then shrink, the skin doesn’t snap back. Exercise improves skin and ligament elasticity. But you might benefit from a super-supportive bra. Look for one that has a thick back with at least three hooks. Can I get HIV from oral séx? Yes. Although the risk is less than with anál or vaginál séx, there have been cases in which HIV was transmitted to women who received oral séx. Infected blood from the mouth can enter your body through the vaginál lining. You can also get HIV by performing oral séx because semen and seminal fluid contain the virus. Your risk goes up if you have sores or cuts in your mouth (which you may have without even realizing it) and if he éjaculates in your mouth. Use condoms or dental dams and make sure your partner gets tested. Why do I get a headache after séx? Your body may be reacting to the fact that séx is a strenuous activity. Or it could be from the increased muscle activity and dilation of blood vessels around your neck and brain. If you’re bothered by coital headaches, ask you doctor about taking an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or a prescription migraine medication 30 minutes before hitting the sheets. If the headaches worsen, or if you start having them at other times, tell your doctor. Why does my gynecologist press down on my stomach? She’s feeling the size, shape and mobility of your uterus, and checking for the presence of cysts, fibroids, or tumors of your ovaries, uterus, or fallopian tubes. Since many of these organs are deep inside the abdomen, she may have to press hard. Your gyno might also insert two fingers into your vágina as she presses on your abdomen. She’s checking for any tenderness in your internal orgáns. If it’s more than a little painful, let her know. She might want to feel around more or run tests to see if there’s something causing you to yowl. My bréasts are lumpy. How can I tell what’s normal? Lumpy, or fibrocystic bréasts, are very common. The lumps are usually benign, but they can make it hard to find bréast tumors. Women like you have more dense areas of tissue in their bréasts than others, so mammograms aren’t as effective a screen for bréast cancer. Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound. Women’s bréasts tend to get lumpier right before the ménstrual period, so do your self-exams (and schedule a mammo or ob/gyn appointment), right after your period. If you notice a new lump that lasts one ménstrual cycle, or if it feels different than others (hard or closer to the surface of your skin), get it checked out. But don’t panic: 80 percent of bréasts lumps are benign. Bottom line: Get to know your bréasts. Schedule yearly checkups and annual screenings after age 40, or earlier if you have a family history of bréast cancer. Do monthly self-exams, so that if something new pops up, you’ll know.
  • Russell arrested for trying to take gun onto plane Former National Basketball Association player and coach Bill Russell was arrested at an American airport for trying to bring a handgun onto an airplane, Seattle television station KIRO 7 reported. The 79-year-old Russell, who was named one of the NBA's 50 greatest players, was arrested Wednesday by law enforcement officers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after a loaded gun was found in his carry on luggage. Russell was cited for having a weapon in a prohibited area and his .38 calibre Smith & Wesson gun was seized by police. Russell was questioned and released. Officials said the firearm was discovered during a screening of passengers' carry on bags. The report did not say if Russell was eventually allowed to board a flight or what he needed the handgun for. Airport officials said Russell had a permit to own a gun. Russell, who lives in the Seattle area, was an 11-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics. He coached the Seattle SuperSonics from 1973-77. The USA has the highest gun ownership in the world and the highest per capita rate of firearm-related murders of all developed countries. In 2010, there were around 10,000 gun homicides in the US in compared to 173 in Canada and just 11 in Japan, according to figures from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

  • How Big Is The Average Manhood? Find Out Here What size is the right size? The average man’s penís is 5.6 inches (14.2 centimeters) long when erect, a new survey of 1,661 men finds. The study, published online July 10 in the Journal of Séxual Medicine, is relatively consistent with the results of prior surveys of penís size. Penís size has been the subject of dozens of studies, as well as countless urban legends, myths and spám emails. For many men, the idea of not measuring up can cause a great deal of ánxiety. But whether penís size truly matters to a man’s séx partner is up for debate. Some research shows that women who experience váginal orgásms do so more consistently with men of bigger girth. Other work suggests bigger isn’t always better: One study found that ideal penís size depends on a person’s height, and another showed that girth matters more than length to most women.
